Lifetime legacy

Why does one person die younger and another survive to old age? Lifestyle and genetic factors play a role, but argues Prof David Barker, a better predictor of future health is our birthweight and what it tells us about our development in the womb.

Our search for ways to prevent today's chronic diseases has largely failed. Soon there will be 250 million people with diabetes worldwide, yet many of those are neither overweight nor inactive.

For most organs there is a critical period during development when a system or organ has to mature. These periods are brief; they occur at different times for different systems; and for most systems they occur in the womb. Only the brain, liver and immune system continue to develop after birth.

The work of Prof David Barker MD FRS CBE and the Barker theory are explored in Horizon: Nine Months That Made You at 9pm on Monday 22 August on BBC Two.

Oil and gas exploration in the Russian Far East continues to threaten whales, delegates at the International Whaling Commission (IWC) meeting have warned.

Seismic surveys entail the use of underwater sound at intensities that can force whales out of the area nearby, and may damage their hearing.

They also reported seeing fewer whales in the feeding area in days immediately following the surveys.

At this year's IWC meeting, the US and UK were among governments expressing concern about the situation and asking Russia to take tougher action.

And Belgium's delegate Alexandre de Lichtervelde said plans for expanding infrastructure at the site were premature.

"We are concerned that one of the companies (Sakhalin Energy) has announced a plan for a new oil and gas platform offshore," he told the meeting.

"That is happening while the full impact of events in 2010 have not been fully assessed."

Valentin Ilyashenko, leader of the Russian delegation here, said all oil and gas projects had to go through an impact assessment; but some effect on the whales could not be avoided.

"Human activities do influence the western gray whale; our task is to minimise the impact from human activities," he told BBC News.

"But we can't stop [human] progress, and we can't stop using oil."

Last year, scientists attempted to put tags on 12 western gray whales in order to track their route to their breeding grounds, believed to be further south.

It was thought that if their migration route could be mapped, other conservation measures could be put in place, such as keeping them out of fishing gear.

In the end, only one tag was placed before time ran out – on a male that scientists dubbed "Flex".

Some weeks later, to the researchers' complete surprise, Flex started heading not south but north and east, ending up on the other side of the Pacific on the US west coast.

This is the area occupied by the separate – and much bigger – eastern gray whale population. Genetic studies show that the two populations do not generally interbreed.

"It was completely the opposite of what any of us had suspected," said Greg Donovan, the IWC's head of science.

"So then we started to look at photos from the catalogue of our animals off Sakhalin island, and compare with those taken down the Pacific coast of the US and further south.

"And we've now ended up with 10 animals that have been seen on both sides."

What that means for our understanding of the western gray whales, or for their conservation, is as yet unclear. Other tagging studies are planned this year that might provide more information.

The gray whale that found its way into the Mediterranean Sea last year, however, probably sheds no light on the issue, said Mr Donovan – it probably just got lost.

Innovative beehive fences have helped a community in Kenya to successfully protect crops from elephants, according to research.

Previous research into natural deterrents showed that elephants avoided African honey bees.

In 32 attempted raids over three crop seasons, only one bull elephant managed to penetrate the novel defences.

The beehives were suspended on wires between posts with a flat thatched roof above to protect from the sun in the traditional Kenyan style.

The team created a boundaries for 17 farms, incorporating 170 beehives into 1,700m of fencing.

"The interlinked beehive fences not only stopped elephants from raiding our study farms but the farmers profited from selling honey to supplement their low incomes," Dr King explained.

"The honey production and consequent income has really incentivised the farmers to maintain the fences."

Conservationists now hope to roll out the scheme to other farming communities.

A vibrant green tree-dwelling lizard has surprised scientists with its mental prowess by succeeding in a problem-solving test.

Manual Leal, the Duke University researcher who led the study, explained: "The first thing we wanted to know was: can they flip over the disc to get the worm?"

This humble, well-studied species is known to have a simple foraging method, whereby it scans the horizon for moving prey and strikes it from above.

"But in our experiment," the researchers explained in their paper, "visual cues were absent and striking from above was an ineffective method dislodging the disc."

But the nimble reptiles quickly learned to use one of two methods to dislodge the disc concealing their treat.

They either bit the edge of the disc and dragged it away or, more inventively, ran into the disc, bumping it out of the way with their heads and grabbing the worm.

"I was surprised by this second method," said Professor Leal. "We weren't expecting that level of problem-solving.

"Using their snout as a lever is not simply transferring a natural behavior [to a new task], it's using a new behavior to solve a new problem."

The researchers then presented the lizards with a choice between two differently coloured discs – a blue one and one that was blue and yellow.

"They learned to associate the colour of the disc with a food reward," said Professor Leal.

"And when we swapped the discs around – [so the worm was underneath the other disc] – they were able to reverse what they'd learned."

A. evermanni lives in the canopies of the tropical forests of Puerto Rico, sleeping in the branches or on the tops of leaves. It eats mainly insects.

"They mostly walk or run on the branches, occasionally jumping from branch to branch," explained Professor Leal.

The scientist speculated that colour discrimination might be useful in the lizards' courtship routines.

"Each [Anolis] species has a somewhat distinct colour or pattern," he said. "So rapid discrimination between colours… might be important for females during the mate selection process."

The ability to be flexible might also allow the lizards to explore and adapt to new habitats and search for new food sources.

(CNN) — The Android cabal is reuniting in a new territory.

In the burgeoning tablet computer market, Google and its legion of hardware partners appear to be recreating the conditions that helped crown the Android operating system king of the hill in smartphones.

Two newer members demonstrated firm commitments to Team Android Tablet last week.

Sony Electronics plans to launch the S1 and S2 tablets, both running Google’s Android, in the fall. Those devices will be Sony’s first major tablet products. And together with Adobe Systems, Sony is hoping to breathe life into Android’s tablet marketplace with a $200,000 competition for application developers.

"We understand that the Android market today hasn’t been exactly what it was forecasted to be," Phil Molyneux, the president and operating chief for Sony Electronics, said during an interview with reporters on Wednesday.

While the total number of Android apps designed for phones continues to skyrocket, into the hundreds of thousands, apps designed for tablets remain a relative rarity. The total, by some estimates, is less than 300.

Compare that to some 90,000 apps made for the Apple iPad or even the 300 available for Hewlett-Packard’s just-released TouchPad, which uses the proprietary webOS software. An abundance of apps is crucial to a platform’s success, most operating-system providers agree.

A Google spokeswoman declined to make a representative available for an interview. At the company’s developers conference in May, Google unveiled a new version of Android that would help app makers design their software to work on most Android phones and tablets.

"We know that high-quality apps are the lifeblood for Android," Android executive Mike Cleron said on stage.

Even Google’s partners aren’t satisfied in that respect.

"Consumers want more apps for Android tablets," Sanjay Jha, chairman and chief executive officer of Motorola Mobility, said in a recent earnings call. Motorola sold fewer than 250,000 units in the first few months, a far cry from the 300,000 iPads sold on its first day and the 25 million sold in the first 14 months.

Nvidia CEO Jen-Hsun Huang told the technology website CNET that Android tablets have several problems, including pricing, marketing and app availability.

Over the next four years, Android tablets are forecast to gain market share but fail to overtake the iPad, according to a recent report from Gartner Research. Meanwhile, Google had already overtaken all smartphone competitors for dominance in that industry, less than four years after the launch of the iPhone and three years after the release of the first Android device.

But Android’s rise to prominence in smartphones, likewise, did not start with a big bang.

However, its challenges were different then. The first Android smartphones were sold by smaller cellular carriers like T-Mobile USA, and there weren’t many devices to choose from. It wasn’t until Verizon Wireless threw its weight behind Google, with the Droid campaign, that Android blasted off in the United States and then elsewhere.

Consumers shopping for a tablet today can choose from a bevy of Android devices. Samsung Electronics has been producing tablets in various sizes since last year. The needle didn’t move much when Motorola debuted the Xoom for telecom giant Verizon.

Industry analysts and executives are struggling to answer the question: Do consumers want tablets, or do they want iPads?

It’s a question worth asking, and this discussion is similar to the portable-media players vs iPods debate. The answer in that case, as Microsoft and others learned, was the latter. People wanted iPods. Samsung isn’t coming close to unseating the iPod Touch with its Galaxy Player, based on Android software.

Electronics manufacturers aren’t waiting idly to find out the answer to the iPad-or-Android tablet question. They are banding together and again, betting on Google to turn the tides.

Toshiba released the Thrive last week. Amazon is working on a tablet, and the Wall Street Journal reports that it will use Android. Research in Motion’s BlackBerry PlayBook tablet will eventually be able to run Android apps, RIM executives have said.

Many players will rely on the success of Android as a means to break into the tablet market, but they are still looking for the impetus that gets consumers onboard.
